Niobium is relatively new to the family of metals used in jewelry findings, though it has been used by artists for several years. You can find many vintage pieces at auction on ebay. Its name is derived from the mythological Greek Goddess Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus. Because Niobium is inert, it is stable and does not cause a metal reaction when worn as jewelry. This is the least likely metal to cause an allergy reaction, so if you haven't been able to wear earrings or other jewelry, good news. I bet you can wear jewelry made of Niobium!Due to the limited quantities geologists have located in the Earth's crust, this beautiful metal has a value many times higher than silver. Niobium is not an alloy. Care of your Anodized Niobium jewelry: The main thing to remember is not to use any abrasive polish or cloth that would wear those oxides down. Your fingers are very abrasive, so constant rubbing could dull the colors. If you ever want to clean Niobium, use Windex or a mild soap and water. Dry with a soft cloth. The color of Niobium does not naturally break down. If care is taken, the colors will last many years into the future. |
